Finished my Mono RSS Reader

Posted in Linux, ubuntu by microwavebiscuit on March 14, 2007

Yesterday I wrote about creating an RSS Reader in Mono based on a tutorial in Linux Format Magazine. I had completed the basic code which enabled the hard coding of a feed URL and then displaying the output in a console. Today I enhanced the code so that from the command line you can subscribe, unsubscribe, view or reset all of your feeds. There are about a million things wrong with it in terms of good coding practices but from a learning perspective it was a heck of a lot more fun than writing “Hello World”. Right now, there is no error checking facility in the code nor is there any verification that the feed you entered is a valid feed. If you enter something wrong, it will just puke. It also will only accept RSS2 formatted feeds. However, as I said, it works, and it was a cool exercise. Even though most of the code was in the article there was enough left out to make it interesting. If you are really interested, here’s a pdf of the completed code.
