Logcheck, Spam Assassin and Errors of the day

Posted in Linux, ubuntu by microwavebiscuit on February 20, 2007

I use the logcheck package which reviews the system logs and e-mails anomalies to me. It’s nice to know what’s going on in my system especially when things get weird. I’ve also installed Spam Assassin to help keep spam at a minimum. I would guess that it’s mis-configured or something as I get logcheck notices on it frequently and it doesn’t seem to ever capture any spam. Here’s a sample of my logcheck email (note: some details changed in the note).

config file is /etc/logcheck/logcheck.conf

In searching google for “prefork: server reached –max-children setting, consider raising it”, that appears to occur in properly configured systems when Spam Assassin is overwhelmed. I find it funny that my PC is “overwhelmed” with getting one or two emails a day.

Look for more great errors of the day in future posts.
